Crimson Desert — Beginner's Guide

Everything you need to master Pywel from your first hour

🗺️ What Kind of Game Is Crimson Desert?

Crimson Desert is a third-person open-world action RPG developed by Pearl Abyss. Unlike traditional RPGs that rely on stat-grinding, the game leans heavily into combo-driven, fighting-game-inspired combat. You play as Kliff Macduff, leader of the Greymane mercenary company, navigating the war-torn continent of Pywel through a mix of brutal combat, political intrigue, and deep exploration. The game does not use a traditional XP leveling system — your power grows through exploration, boss encounters, Abyss Artifact collection, and NPC interaction. Two companion characters (Oongka and Damiane) unlock as you progress, each bringing distinct fighting styles.

⚔️ First Steps: What to Do Early in Crimson Desert

  • Explore the Hernand Plains first — the starting region is richest in beginner-friendly quests, resources, and Abyss Artifacts.
  • Find Traces of the Abyss immediately in every new region — these unlock fast travel points that save huge amounts of time.
  • Talk to every NPC you encounter — some skills in Crimson Desert can only be unlocked by witnessing specific NPC techniques in the world.
  • Do not skip cooking — food buffs to Health, Spirit, and Stamina provide a meaningful edge in tough boss fights.
  • Dispatch Comrades to blocked locations even early on — they return with resources and currency without requiring your physical presence.
  • Upgrade your gliding artifact early — extended glide duration opens aerial combat approaches most players miss until late game.
  • Experiment with all weapon types before committing — Kliff's weapon flexibility is a core design pillar; find what clicks for you.

🌍 The Five Regions of Pywel

🗺️ Hernand Plains

The starting region. Rolling fields, mercenary camps, and the first encounters with the Black Bear faction. Best for learning core combat and looting Abyss Artifacts.

🗺️ Pailune Snow Mountains

A harsh frozen highland filled with ice-elemental enemies. Frost-resistant equipment is advisable. The terrain rewards gliding and vertical mobility.

🗺️ Demeniss

The militarized capital region. Heavy enemy presence, complex fortresses to liberate, and some of the game's most challenging named bosses.

🗺️ Delesyia

A dense rainforest region. Enemies here are highly mobile and use ambush tactics. Rich in rare crafting materials.

🗺️ The Crimson Desert

The late-game arid wasteland that gives the game its name. Extreme environmental hazards, endgame bosses, and the deepest lore revelations await here.

🧠 How Progression Works (No XP Leveling)

Crimson Desert replaces traditional XP-based leveling with a skill tree powered entirely by Abyss Artifacts — fragments dropped by bosses, found in hidden locations, and rewarded from quests. These artifacts unlock new skills, increase Health and Stamina pools, and enhance existing abilities. Your build is shaped by which artifacts you prioritize. Additionally, equipping Abyss Gears in your weapon and armor slots adds modifiers like increased attack speed, critical hit bonuses, and cooldown reductions. Because some skills only unlock by observing specific NPCs in the world, thorough exploration directly increases your combat power — making curiosity a genuine stat in Crimson Desert.

🏕️ Greymane Camp — Base Management

Your camp serves as a living home base that grows as you invest resources into it. Core camp activities include: meal preparation for combat buffs, farm and ranch management for sustainable food supply, furniture crafting to unlock passive bonuses, and Comrade dispatch missions. Comrades sent on missions return with currency, crafting materials, and intelligence on enemy positions. They can also be deployed to weaken enemy-held fortresses and blockades without Kliff being present — a powerful parallel progression system. Prioritize unlocking the ranch early so you have a steady mount supply, and upgrade the kitchen to access higher-tier food buff recipes.

⚔️ Combat Basics — How Fighting Works

Combat in Crimson Desert is built around freedom: Kliff can freely switch weapon types mid-combo, layer elemental effects (fire, ice, wind) onto any attack, grapple enemies off their mounts, and exploit the environment to his advantage. The system draws inspiration from Samurai Shodown and King of Fighters rather than Dark Souls, resulting in faster, more expressive encounters. Key mechanics include: timed parries that completely negate damage and open counter windows, perfect dodge rolls that restore stamina, aerial combo launchers, and elemental detonations that deal bonus damage to airborne enemies. Stamina management is critical — never drain it fully before a boss uses a major attack, or you lose your dodge roll.

🐎 Mounts — All 29 Varieties

Crimson Desert features 29 confirmed mount types including horses, bears, dinosaur-like raptors, wyverns, and a late-game missile-firing mech. Mounts are not just traversal tools — they integrate into combat. You can ride into enemy formations, perform mounted attacks, and grapple enemies to steal their mounts. Wyverns and dragons enable aerial traversal between regions. Focus on acquiring and upgrading a reliable horse early, then unlock flying mounts as soon as your story progression allows, since aerial fast travel dramatically speeds up cross-region exploration.

⚔️ Factions — Greymanes vs Black Bears

Two dominant factions shape Pywel's political landscape. The Greymanes are Kliff's mercenary company — loyal, battle-tested, but diminished after years of war. The Black Bears are a rival faction led by the warlord Myurdin, who seeks dominion over Pywel's territories. Liberating strongholds from Black Bear control by defeating their garrison soldiers and commanding boss restores access to merchants, safe resting points, and resource flows in that area. Faction story quests unlock key cutscenes and companions.

Can I replay boss fights in Crimson Desert?

Yes. Named bosses can be re-challenged after defeating them, useful for farming their equipment drops and Signature Abilities.

How do I unlock Oongka and Damiane?

Both companions unlock through story progression. Oongka joins relatively early in the main quest, while Damiane's questline opens later. Each brings a unique fighting style — Oongka is a berserker melee fighter, Damiane is a gunslinger.
